KNYSNA – Team Featherbed Painted Wolf made waves in the international adventure racing series when they romped home to a massive win in the 2016 Expedition Africa Adventure Race.
Part of the Adventure World Series, this was the first time the race was held in Knysna, after stints in Swaziland, Drakensberg and Port Elizabeth.
Local athletes Mark Collins, his brother John Collins, NSRI volunteer and master brewer Darrren Berry and well-known endurance athlete Jeannie Dryer put it all on the line as they basically raced non-stop in the gruelling 500 plus km event that covers multiple disciplines.
They were chased hard by Merrel Adventure (ranked 7th in the world) and a field of 54 teams.
Local knowledge played a very small role as the organisers, Kinetic Events, made sure the course was very technical with some fast sections and some serious paddles, taking in the whole of the Garden Route. Winning by 3 hours in 3 days, 12 hours and 33 minutes, Team Featherbed Painted Wolf also earned themselves an entry into the World Championships in Australia later in the year where they will be more closely watched this time around.
